The pattern is identical at each vertex (corner).

Tessellations are described by listing the number of sides of each of the shapes meeting at a vertex.

Each corner in the hexagonal pattern is shared by three hexagons. The hexagons each have six sides, so the tessellation is 6.6.6.

Semi-regular tessellations can have two or more shapes tessellated together. There are eight semi-regular tessellations (see left).

Again, the pattern at each vertex is the same, though it might be rotated.

Irregular tessellations don’t have the same pattern at each vertex and so can’t be described using the same system. They must still cover the whole surface without gaps or overlaps. This irregular tessellation is in the Alhambra palace, Spain:
